  • running 32 bit 2003 R2 on 64 bit hardware

    Hi,

we've got a 2003 R2 domain with sattelite office connected via VPN.

We need to buy a new server but most hardware manufacturers seem to offer 64 bit options only.

We've a got a SQL app that's unstable/unsupported on 2008 SVR so we really need to use 2003 SVR.

If I use 2003 64 bit will I still have same issues? Is this worthwhile?

How will 2003 SVR 32 bit run on 64 bit hardware? this is what I'm currently thinking of then later on when the app is made 2008 SVR compatiblie I can upgrade at a later date

Any advice on moving forward with this would be much appreciated

    TIA

    A

Re: running 32 bit 2003 R2 on 64 bit hardware

What are the hardware specs/manifacturer/model of the new server?
In general it should be ok, but I think it's not possible to install 32 bit OS on Itanium based machines though.

Re: running 32 bit 2003 R2 on 64 bit hardware

Hmm the hardware you're talking about is the processor C2D or Xeon ? if so 64bit processor can run 64bit and 32bit OS, but 32bit processors cannot run 64bit OS. If you are talking about itanium processors, it's only cappable of 64bit OS, and some softwares 32bit in emulation mode, so you can only install 64bit OS in Itanium. Is there going to be any problems ? don't really know, best thing to do is ask the software company it's compatible. Try to give more details about the new server.

I asked the software guys and they say not Mimer 9 is unstable on 2008 server.

        here's the specs:
PLATFORM Altos G540 Multi-Core Workgroup Server
        64-bit Multi-Core Intel® Xeon® Processor 5000 series
        Chipset Intel® 5000P
        Integrated dual-port gigabit Ethernet
Integrated ATI ES1000 with 16 MB of VRAM
        610 Watt hot-swap power supply
Two PS/2 ports, One serial port (DB9 and RJ-45)
        One parallel port
        Four USB ports (two front-accessible)
        Two Ethernet (RJ-45) ports
        One VGA port

Re: running 32 bit 2003 R2 on 64 bit hardware

Well nothing saying that it's a itanium processor, as i can see it suports Xeon Skt771 Processors. You can install either 32bit ou 64bit OS in that server with no problem. The server has 4 Gig's of ram, don't know if it takes more than that, for a 32bit os no problem, but if you need more ram than 4gb you are limited at the start by your OS. Try to write down what you really need and the what are the requirements of your software to make the right choice.

            Hi Kevin,

thanks for your feedback very much appreciated. I thought as much but good to get ref when spending so much on hardware.

The specs suit the app on 32 bit.

I guess the kind of feedback I was looking for also was will this function as well as it would with similar specs on 32 bit hardware?

I'd go for the 64 bit but I've read where there are issues with databases and ODBC. Scared is a good adjective. LOL.

Re: running 32 bit 2003 R2 on 64 bit hardware

Hmm i had a problem with a software that i installed with 64bit OS, i installed the software with no problem and the softwrae would start , but then it complains saying that the Backward Compatability was not installed, and it was....so sometime 32bit software will not work very well. In my opinion if it's possible, try to install win2003 64bit in a Virtual Machine and see how it works with your software. Make some tests.

Just had Acer confirm no problems running on this hardware.

Thanks for your advice...points to you!
