  • DNS Reverse Lookup Zones

    hello one and all!

we currently run a 2000 domain with xp clients, dns has been installed on the schema server but without any reverse lookup zones

when i went to add a zone i chose AD integrated, then its asking for either "Network ID" or "Zone Name" we use the 192.168.0 range of address but we also have remote sites that connect in via VPN on different subnets, so i thought i will have to use "Zone Name" does this name matter what it is?

or do i just add a new zone for each ip range?

is the name the same as the domain? so if the domain was called "POP" the zone name would be "POP.ds"?

    thanks all

** sorry i shoudl of mentioned the reason i believe we need a reverse zone configured is that when you run "nslookup" i am getting the error

***can't find server name for address "dns servers ip" : non existant domain

although browsing the network and name resolution works on the network

    Re: DNS Reverse Lookup Zones

    Hi mate,

The Zone name will be based on the network ID. I'd just use the internal LAN network ID for now. How's your VPN setup?
I am assuming you are allocating IP addresses to the VPN clients from the Internal LAN subnet range.

Hope it helps (especially if you are a Blue )

      Re: DNS Reverse Lookup Zones

      hello mate

the vpns are all connecting in with

      192.168.1.0
      192.168.2.0
      192.168.3.0 etc

but with a bit of jiggery pokery in the routing tables on the servers

so im ok just to add a reverse zone for 192.168.0.0 will that surfice for all of our connecting in VPN's or will i need to add more zones for each subnet?

      sorry...im a red ha!

Personally i would add each subnet in its own Reverse Zone.

That however is my opinion only.
