  • Help on Understanding DHCP across multiple subnets

    Hi Guys,

I'm a little confused on a little topic within DHCP.

In my company we have a number of scopes for different subnets which correspond to our sites. We have the DHCP servers set on our HQ LAN.

    My question is this:

When a client on one of the remote subnets asks for a DHCP address its obviously coming into our DHCP servers here at HQ, But how does the DHCP server know what subnet to give to the request?

I little basic i know but I'm baffled!

    Cheers in advance.

    IP Helper

It's a simple service usually on a router or switch that forwards a broadcast to a unicast address.

      Exactly.

What it basically does is sends a packet to a predetermined ip address looking for an ip address for that subnet.
