  • Unable to stop service in windows 2003 server

Hi everybody! I'm trying to stop a service in Windows 2003 and all it says for status is "Stopping" and has been for hours. Is there a way to force it to stop? I've tried "net stop" and it said "The service could not be controlled in its present state." Any other way? I need to avoid rebooting the server. The particular name for the service is swprv. I cannot run windows nt backup because of this service

Please anybody get back to me ASAP
    Thank you
    Alex

You can try killing it with pskill.

Thank you for quick reply. I already tried this tool.
      I received message
''Unable to kill process swprv . Process does not exit. Unless I am doing this wrong. I go command prompt, then windows directory--->system32. And run this program against this service which I want to stop. Is it right?

      Thank you

You can bring up task manager, find the pid for the process in question, and kill it by the pid.

There is no option in task manager for PID.This service even not listed under the processes.

          Thanks

You have to add the PID column to Task Manager. The service must be running under one of the svchost.exe processes. you can run process monitor to identify the PID for this particular process.

Thank you very much. I found PID number in different way. I used sc queryex with process name to get PID number. Then used pskill with this number. I was able to kill this process.

              Thanks again for your help.

That service is used for Shadow Copy.

Why doesn't NTBackup run when that service is enabled???

What exactly happens whenyou try to run NTBackup with the service enabled???
