Yes buy the Exchange Agent for Backup Exec. Install the remote agent on the 2008 server and backup your exchange box.

      ya exchange agent for backupexec

08 server has inbuild backup system which you can use to backup the exchange Volume itself

just another option to save the tape space.

I would forget about using Server 2008 native backup as it is not Exchange aware and only backs up whole volumes
I'm not sure if it will deal with open files in Exchange but it certainly will not deal with transaction logs properly

From (bitter) experience, get Backup Exec and do it properly!
