  • Urgent: at remote site - DCDIAG 1355

I setup a laptop as a DC & replicated AD on it so I can take it over to the remote location and replicate it over to the new server I have here.

Appearantly, It's not the operations master. (I didn't have intention of moving the OM to this one anyway) Can I make this Operation Master?

All I'm trying to acheive is to have the same AD in both locations, and make the new server the main controller of the remote location.

Please help, I have limited time at this site.

    Why not following this procedure?

Make sure you also create the sites in sites and services and that there is a good (VPN) connection between them.

thanks, I don't have a site-to-site vpn, I want to keep the sites separate for now. I just want this server to be a fully operational DC at this location with all the roles installed here.

Well if you don't have a connection between them then the DC's can't replicate.
It will give you loads of trouble in case they might start replicating.

You have to build a new domain

Re: Urgent: at remote site - DCDIAG 1355

Can't I have a stand alone replica of my operations master DC? Do I need to ghost that DC and bring it here for it to work? I thought the following was possible:

          1. Installed 2003 server on a laptop
          2. Made it DC / Global Catalog Server.
          3. Replicated AD onto it.
          4. Bring it to a new site.
          5. Join the new server onto my laptop's domain
          6. Replicate.
          7. disconnect the laptop.
          8. use that new server as a stand alone DC at this location

          My theory doesn't work?

          thanks much for your help.

You might consider upgrading the domain to W2K8 and creating a RODC in the remote office. If you attempt to do it with W2K3 you're asking for trouble if the two offices don't have a dedicated connection to each other.

understood. In the meantime if a dedicated line is down, can the server still serve client logins?

              tnx

I believe so. Here's more info:

                http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc732801.aspx

Also, you don't need to upgrade the domain, you only need one writeable W2K8 DC.

Should do as long as it's a GC and DNS server on the remote site.
Watch out the line is not down for too long though as it may result in lingering objects being created and consequently more problems.

                    thanks all for your help.

I was able to initiate a client VPN from the server to my main site and joined it as an AD DC. Ended up not using this server as DNS/DHCP on the remote site though. It got complicated when it was trying to find nearby server for reps and routing client to the mail server. I'm using it as File/Print server until I get a site-to-site VPN up and running.

                    Thanks Again,
