  • service password

    Hi,

I have 2 nodes clustered , these nodes have sql server 2000.

in both of them i have set a domain user account on the cluster service & the sql server service & the sql agent service .

whenever i want to move the groups from one node to another, i have to retype the password on the above three services again.

also when i restart the node, i have to retype the passwords on the three services.

how can i set these services to always remember the entered password.

    Thanks,
    Tarek

    Re: service password

    Hi Tarek,

I'm far from being a SQL/Cluster specialist but can you tell us a bit more about the environment so maybe others can help you out

    Which OS are you running?
    What are the servicepacks?
What permissions does the user have?
Is there anything in the eventlogs?

        Re: service password

According to this Blog you should "never use the plain old Windows Service Control Manager (SCM) to manipulate SQL Services. The SQL Server Configuration Manager does a lot more work in the background to keep security consistent across the installation. "

        Hope it helps

          Re: service password

Sorry in the delay to reply, was monitoring other threads and didnt notice that my own thread get populated

The OS is : Windows 2000 Advanced Server
          SP: SP4
Is the service account member of the local administrators group : Yes

These three services i have used the same domain member account from AD.

          Cluster Service
          SQL Server Service
          SQL Agent Service.

Whenever i need to move the resources from one cluster to another, to secceed and get no erros, i need to set again the passwords on all of the above services, restart the Cluster service so that the logon password takes effect, then i will move the resources from one cluster node to another. once the resources are moved. automatically sql agent and sql server services are started.

The one thing i want to to get rid is having to enter the password on the above services whenever i need to move resources from one cluster node to another.

          Thanks,
          Tarek

            Re: service password

I know less than road kill about clusters and SQL (seriously) but could you add these accounts into their own specific Security or Global Group?

              Re: service password

              An Update.

I have others clusters with Windows server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 and i dont have the same issue on these servers.

Is this a known issue only with Windows 2000 Server ? Anyone still having clusters with Windows 2000 Server ? Seems like you wont have such issue with 2003 & 2008 !!!
