  • Should I have DNS on the web server or the DC ?

We are moving the IIS & web services work loads to a new server, we had everything running off one single box before.

Do I run DNS on the web server or the DC ? Is it necessary to run DNS on both the web server and DC server(also runs SQL 2005) ?

Leave DNS on the DC although I suggest you get another DC for fault tolerance (there is a difference with running DNS on a non-DC). Generally it is best to run everything on its own box, as you then only have a failure of one part of your network rather than everything should a single server go down. Having said that it isn't really cost effective that way. Services like DNS, DHCP and WINS can generally be left to a DC as long as it has enough power. SQL and active directory will fight for memory, just like running Exchange on a DC.
    cheers
