  • Unalbe to uninstall SP2 [W2K3]

    Hi there,

    I'm having troubles uninstalling SP2 from my Windows 2003 machine. I started installing SP2 a few days back, but the install got about 70% completed when it froze. I could still get around on the desktop, so I let the install sit there for five or six hours before killing the process in taskmgr and then rebooting.

    When the machine came back up, it said that SP2 was installed in add/remove programs. I know the install didn't complete properly, so I tried to uninstall SP2 and got the following errors:

    "The system could not find the file specified"

    "Service Pack 2 was not uninstalled"

    So I'm not sure how to reinstall SP2 if I can't remove the failed installation. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm currently downloading the SP2 ISO that I saw on the SP2 sticky in this forum. If anyone else has suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.

    Thx.

    Just try to reinstall SP2. If it works it will overwrite the previous failed install.

      If that fails you can try the Spuninst utility.

      Code:
      %systemroot%\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\Spuninst.exe /Option

        Re: Unalbe to uninstall SP2 [W2K3]

        Thanks for the suggestions.

        I tried using the command line options for the uninstall, but I received the same errors I mentioned in my original post. The Event Viewer doesn't tell me very much:

        ==========================
        Event Type: Error
        Event Source: NtServicePack
        Event Category: None
        Event ID: 4375
        Date: 1/23/2009
        Time: 12:09:26 PM
        User: HOSTNAME\Administrator
        Computer: HOSTNAME
        Description:
        Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 uninstall failed.
        The system cannot find the file specified.

        For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
        ==========================

        I also tried forcing an install of SP2 with that ISO I downloaded, but it gave me the following error:

        "Failed to install catalog files"

        And in the Event Viewer:

        ==========================
        Event Type: Error
        Event Source: NtServicePack
        Event Category: None
        Event ID: 4374
        Date: 1/23/2009
        Time: 1:24:56 PM
        User: HOSTNAME\Administrator
        Computer: HOSTNAME
        Description:
        Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 installation failed, leaving Windows Server 2003 partially updated.
        Failed to install catalog files.

        For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
        ==========================

        I am currently rebooting, and trying both suggestions again ...

        Assuming they both fail, does anyone else have some ideas?

        Thx again.

          What happens when you run Microsoft Update on the Server?

              SP2 is not an available update. When I first tried to install SP2, it froze about 75% through. When I rebooted, Windows claimed SP2 was installed. Hence windows update not providing SP2 as an available update. The only available updates are post-SP2.

              Great article, but same results. During the install I'm given an error saying "Failed to install catalog files" and that the SP2 install is not complete.

              Anyone else want to take a crack at this? I may just re-image the machine to save me the headache.

              Thx again.

                  Re: Unalbe to uninstall SP2 [W2K3]

                  Can you run the install process and and choose the second Repair option? That should wipe the SP2 problem. You could also slipstream SP2 onto the Win2K3 CD and install the O/S already updated.

                  Another option is to call Microsoft. If you are a Partner you may have a free ticket available for use.

                    Re: Unalbe to uninstall SP2 [W2K3]

                    You can try Method 3, as described here:
                    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;822798
                    (It may look like the 2-solution together from Dumber's link but this is not entirely the same)

                    Else, read also this solution,

                      Re: Unalbe to uninstall SP2 [W2K3]

                      Hey guys, thanks for all the tips.

                      I tried method's 1, 2, 3, and 9 on the link you gave me Rems, but no luck. Biggles77, I couldn't see anything in repair mode that would help me with service packs. Dumber, I think you gave me the same steps as Method.

                      I had to get this machine up today, so I formatted and started again last night. Sorry guys, but I appreciate the hand.

                      For the forum's sake, I believe the real trouble here was that I could not get the original installation of SP2 off my machine. Most of the support articles I have read are about installing SP2 on top of SP1. In my case, Windows /believes/ SP2 is installed, but I know the installation failed. If I could uninstall it, then I'd probably be fine.

                      Thx again for all the help. Consider this thread closed.

                        You resoved it?

                        Well, eventually you still want sp2 having installed, I presume.

                        AFAIK, it should be no problem to re-install the most recent service pack even when it is already partially updated.

                        Check the value of "DisableRollback" (type: REG_DWORD) in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Wind ows\Installer
                        and/or..,
                        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Win dows\Installer
                        If the item exist the value should be set to 0.

                        When the installation or deinstallation of the product returns an error, then there could perhaps also be a problem with the windows installer. Try: "Windows Installer CleanUp".

                          Again, thanks for the help.

                          I was pressed for time, so I just re-imaged the machine. Everything works great now.

                          Wish I had more time to figure this out. I hate leaving threads unresolved.

                          Take care.
