  • run exe file when logon ( but only once )

    Hi,

I have a exe file I would like to execute when users logon their PC. I have a logon batch file to map network drives when users logon their pc, but I would also like it to run a exe file when they logon. The exe file should only be run once, so if they logon the next time, it would check if the exe file already has been executed.

All the clients ar e windows XP, the server is windows server 2003, but I dont use group policies.

The batchfile is placed in \\servername\NETLOGON.

( hope you guys could understand what I was trying to explain )

How can you see the exe has been executed? - like, does it copy program files or is it listed on the Windows installed sofware list?

It is a windows update. I want to make sure that everybody gets this installed. I dont know how to identify it.

        Couldn't you better use WSUS?

I assume users don't have administrator rights on their computers, therefore the script must be executed as a Computer Startup script not as a user logonscript.
If it is required to reboot the machine after the installation, then execute the patch through a Computer Shutdown script.

For the script to determine whether the patch has been installed or not, it must search the computer for the unique 'name / ID' of the installed patch.
Can you post the available details that you can find on a reference computer about the patch.

you could run systeminfo.exe from a dos prompt, to obtain the 'Patch ID' of the patch
          or,
via control pannel / add or remove programs --> "show updates" checked - to obtain the 'display name'.

          or, (preferred),
search the registry in these keys (and please, export then copy-paste the all subkeys concerning this patch only)
          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft \Updates\ ...\ ...
          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft \Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\ ...\ ...
          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft \Windows NT\CurrentVersion\HotFix\ ...\ ...

Would this be a good situation to simply use the HKCU (Or HKLM, depending on your needs) RunOnce key?

I did it the easy way, by sending everybody an e-mail, with a link to the update.

But thanks for all your replies, just have'nt got the time to implement them.

Implementation of WSUS is pretty straight forward.

Knowing how users always do what IT ask, I would still run one of the checking options to see which user "Will run the update when they have time"

Can't you just stick a txt file on the root of the drive and check for that before installing???

You must be one of the lucky ones
I wouldn't personally leave any IT Admin tasks at the User's hands.
WSUS does a pretty good job, is free and given the fact that you don't seem to have any Patch management solution in place It's a good practice to deploy one.

Just stick the words virus hazard to the mail, and everybody goes apeshit

I'll defenetly look into WSUS, and maybe implement this in the future.

Thanks allot for all your replies.
