  • running a windows 2003 DC with a win2k FSMO

    Hi there,

We currently have a windows server 2000 that is the FSMO for our domain, NETDOM confirms this - however another win2000 box that was also an active directory controller has failed, we have a windows 2003 server box that could easily handle the job but I don't know if that can be done. I believe there is a licensing issue?

I have tried to search the internet for this however all I find is a zillion articles about "upgrading" - I don't want to upgrade, I want to keep the win2k server as the FSMO and just run DCPROMO on the windows 2003 box so it can also server as a domain controller in case this one fails.

    Thanks for any advice!

It can indeed. It should be as easy as this:-

Join the 2K3 box to the domain if it isn't already, then run dcpromo on it and add it as a new domain controller in the existing domain.

    But it isn't.

    Thankfully Microsoft have the answers.

Make sure you run ADprep before adding a 2003 DC.
