  • Hard Fail & Rebuild! SYSVOL Repl & DC Advertising

    Hi,
We are in a real pickle!

We had an Exchange server go down hard and had to rebuild from the ground up. The server was a domain controller with Exchange installed. It was the secondary server in a group of 2 DC/AD servers.

We rebuilt the OS (W2k3) installing AD/DC/WINS/Application. We are waiting on installing Exchange because when we run netdiag and dcdiag we get an Advertising error stating that when looking for this server it finds the primary instead of the secondary and in DCDIAG it shows that replication has not completed.

We have renamed the secondary server and kept the origianl IP address, but there are still entries in AD for the old server name (cleaning them out as we find them). Here are the pertinent lines from netdiag & dcdiag:

    NETDIAG:

Sounds like a classic case for the metadata cleanup! If a DC crashes you still need to clean up after it. This KB tells you how to do it. Follow it religiously and you will be fine.

      Thanks
We pretty much went through all of the steps in the metadata cleanup. The only thing in addition is that we promoted the secondary server to a global catalog but it didn't seem to help.

We are still getting the same netdiag/dcdiag errors.

Any other ideas? or someplace that the metadate cleanup may have missed?

      Thanks

Can you post the output of "repadmin /showrepls" and "repadmin /replsum" ?

Re: Hard Fail & Rebuild! SYSVOL Repl & DC Advertising

Had same issue with DC SYSVOL folder not replicating.

Ran dcdiag and netdiag with similar results.

However i didnt follow the metadata cleanup as this was not required on my domain.

I checked that WINS and DNS were properly configured to replicate both push/pull partners as well as reverse DNS zones.

Also if DC's are in seperate sites then makesure bridgehead IP transport is enabled (if necessary)

Once this had replicated across all DC's and I had restarted DNS server on faulty DC and I was able to see the shared SYSVOL folder.

A quick dcdiag and netdiag confirmed replication was working.
