  • WSUS 3.0 SP1 - (Restart) Remind me later button grayed out

    Hi

I'm running a WSUS 3.0 SP1 server and I have a problem with restarting klients.

We run several callcenters and handle customers on the phone, and the users cannot have their klients restarting without being able to stop it. (The agents must have their computers operational while talking to the customer

    So to the problem...

The updates run just fine and so on, but when an update requires a restart... the users get a progressbar telling them that the computer is going to restart in 5 minutes.

I know I can increase this limit, but I want the users to be able to be "reminded later" until they choose to restart.

The progressbar they get has a "restart now" button, and a "remind me later" button. Problem is that the "remind me later" button is grayed out.

The users are local admins in this case...

      Hello.

Try this and let me know what happens.

Allow non-administrators to receive update notifications". This coupled with "4 - Auto download and schedule the install"

will download the updates install, and then popup the restart now or later box with both options available to the user.

I cant seem to find the "Allow non-administrators to receive update notifications" under Computer configuration -> administrative templates ->windows components ->windows update.

Can you point me in the right direction?

Seems like this has solved the problem, however... now that I have pushed it out in my eniter organisation... I have discovered that a whole lot of computers does not populate the wsus console.

I have about 600 computers administrated, and only 113 has registered with WSUS.

I will post this in a new thread.

Were the machines installed from an image?

Try running wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow on the machines that don't show up - you'll want to use something like psexec on that many machines

                  That worked like a charm!

                  Thanks alot Gareth

I have absolutely no experience with psexec... Could you assist?

You have two options. You can either run psexec once and pass it a long list of computers, or use a batch file to run psexec multiple times, once for each line in a text file. The text file will contain a list of computers, one computer per line.

Run psexec /? to see the syntax, but to execute cmd on a computer called alan and to execute the command as a user called toss who's a member of the domain modern you would enter:

                    psexec \\alan -u MODERN\toss cmd

EditPsexec also supports reading in a list of computers from a file - no need to use a batch file.

Is there any way to run this command on for example an OU from active directory? Or just make it run on all computers in my domain?
Would like to not export lists of computers and just kinda run it quick and dirty on all computers in the domain if you know what I mean

Computer startup script through GP would be possible but I would recommend against that If you run this command on a machine that's already registered with WSUS, it will cause it to re-register as a new machine. Not a disaster, but it does mean that computers would be moved into the default group. Psexec would be the best option I think, the alternative would be to install something like SpecOps Remote Admin on your DC. A standalone like psexec is going to be preferable to installing software on your DC.
