  • DNS issue

I'm working on a plan to upgrade from NT4 to 2003 but have some questions.

    1. We currently have an NT4 network. We use the DNS on our firewall/router. When I install 2003 on the new PDC I need to install DNS for AD, correct? Or can I just tell it to use the DNS in our firewall? If not should I just install DNS locally? How do I tell it to also use the DNS in our firewall?

    2. Do the workstations need to use the DNS on the 2003 server? Can they just use the old DNS settings? On our kiosks we have no DNS (they use host files so they cant surf the net).

    3. My NT4 PDC is also my WINS server. Will 2003 be able to do WINS just like the NT4 box? Or will it only do WINS via DNS?

    Thanks

      No specialist needed.

Ive done more research on the subject, and yes, I will need to install DNS. My real question is with the kiosks. My understanding is that the clients do not need the 2003 DNS, but Im not 100% sure. I cannot find a definitive answer for this. If they do I imagine I can give them the 2003 DNS but not the DNS to our firewall, on the client side. The 2003 DNS will just be for AD related tasks. Is this practical?

I know there's a WINS server for 2003 and I am assuming it will operate in the same was a s NT4. I plan to change the client-side WINS to the 2003 server.

Haha personally I would go for it if you uncertain.
But your clients need to use the DNS from the Windows 2003 server.
Also Wins is supported on Windows 2003.
