  • FSMO role allocation

At my work we currently have 2 servers (windows server 2003 enterprise edition - old, and a windows server 2003 R2 enterprise edition -new), the new one I dcpromoed a couple days ago, it took me a while to figure out how to get it done. Now I'm wondering what is the best way to spread out the fsmo roles. I want to get the new server to take most of the networks load but keep the dns server on the old one. Which would be the best/most recommended way of spreading them? At the moment the old server is the master for all roles.

    Re: FSMO role allocation

    Hi Whitethorn,

Firstly I would make the new DC a Global Catalogue so both DC are GC's

Personally I would'nt bother relocating the FSMO roles between the two servers. You only have one domain with two DC's. If you had multiple domains then this would be different.

Take a look at the following article:

Additionally I would recommend putting DNS on the new one too.
