  • Windows 2000 Server Backup

    Hi guys,

I have a problem. I have a Windows 2000 server DC with SP4 that I need to backup, using a normal backup. I use a 160GB external hard drive as my backup media, and the server has about 50GB total storage, made up of two 10GB HDs and one 30GB HD.

    Hereís the problem,

Every time I run the Windows 2000 backup tool, itíll go for 30 minutes or so, and then stop, giving an error message that the backup media is full. When I check the external HD, the backup file is only 4GB in size, and 155GB free.

What could be the problem here? I really need to backup this server. Its tape drive is dead.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

    Event logs?

Presumably the external drive is connected via USB, or is it a NAS? Firewire? eSata?

Is the server up to date (or at least, as close as you can get with W2K). If your external device requires drivers, are they up to date?

Can you manually copy more than 4GB onto the external drive successfully? Have you reformatted the drive and run chkdsk on it? Have you tried a different external drive?

Have you reformatted the external harddisk as NTFS?
It sounds that the disk has been formatted as FAT32 which has a filesize limitation of 4GB

The external HD is connected via USB cable.

Yes, I copied files of about 10GB from the server to the drive.

        No,I haven't tried a different external HD.

I'll run the program again and check the Event Logs.

I think you hit it on the horn. The external HD is FAT32 file system.

Let me convert it to NTFS and see what happens.

        Thanks for the quick replies,guys.

Well their you go. FAT32 doesn't support files larger then 4GB.
