  • renaming a Windows Server 2003 DC

hey ppl, I want to rename my master dc using netdom but all articles are telling me to 'make sure the DC's level is set to "Windows Server 2003". My current domain function level is set to Windows 2000 native. Is it still posible to change the dc name using netdom or can I just change it in the Computer Name tab in My Computer? thanks for any help

Re: renaming a Windows Server 2003 DC

To rename a domain controller using the Netdom tool, the domain functional level must be set to Windows Server 2003.

    It is a requirement.

You can change it in either place.

thanks for your reply. So would it be safe to change the name going thru the 'Computer name' tab in System Properties even though my function level is NOT set to Windows Server 2003?

really, even though my functional level is not set to specs? have you done this yourself with no side effects?

I don't believe the domain functional level has anything to do with renaming a domain controller. Renaming a domain name is different to renaming a domain controller. Anyway yes I have done it in the past without issues. Just be aware that anything that uses the old hostname will need updating. Say login scripts?
