  • Domain Controller on Windows Server 2003

    hi all,

i am new to this forum. i have searched for same topic on here, read some of them but still could not get it to work.

Here is my issue, Thanks in advance.

i have this DNS server with Windows Server 2000 running and it is ok for now. i also have another server with Windows Server 2003 installed and been running good. i am trying to get this Windows Server 2003 run as our back up DNS in case if the Windows Server 2000 goes down then i'll just use this server 2003 as our DNS server. When i tried to install the second domain controller in my active directory domain controller on my windows 2003 server then i got this error message:

"The Active Directory Installation Wizard cannot continue because the forest is not prepared for installing Windows Server 2003. Use the Adprep command-line tool to prepare both the forest and the domain. for more information about using the Adprep, see Active Directory help. The version of the Active Directory schema of the source forest is not compatible with the version of Active directory on this computer."

    Then i tried to do:

ADPrep /forestprep on the schema master in your Windows 2000 forest.
ADPrep /domainprep on the Infrastructure Master in each AD domain

on Windows Server 2003, i got this error message:
"The image file adprep\Adprep.exe is valid, but is for a machine type other than the current machine"

Any help is appreciated. Thank you

Typically you should put the Windows 2003 CD into the Windows 2000 DC and run the commands from there. Are you running this update from the Windows 2003 server? What version of Windows 2003 is this? Is it R2?

Thanks SK. yes i did run from windows 2003 server. it is windows server 2003 R2. so if i got this server 2003 run as our second dc successfully then would it be able to run as our only DC if the other one goes down or i turn it off ?

You would need to make sure DNS is running on this server too. Also have all clients have this server as their secondary DNS server. It would also need to be a Global Catalog.

          SK,
when i run The ADPrep /forestprep on Windows Server 2000, it does what its supposed to do. But when I run ADPrep /domainprep on Windows Server 2000, the dos screen comes up and then gone right away. The same on Windows Server 2003, it just brings me to the Adprep folder in the CD. Any ideas what might be wrong here ? help please. Thanks SK.

Are you running ADPREP on the 2000 Server from Disk 2 of the 2003 Server CDs? This is in the link that ]SK[ provided above.

Open up a command prompt first then run the commands so you can read if there are any error messages.

Start > Run > Type CMD Click "OK"

              CDROMDriveLetter:\CMPNENTS\R2\ADPREP\adprep.exe /domainprep

                SK,

Thank you, my bad, after i used the cmd to run the: \CMPNENTS\R\ADPREP\ADPrep.exe /forestprep on Windows Server 2000. it did not run. i got this error message:

"Adprep was unable to extend the schema.
                [Status/Consequence]
The schema master did not complete a replication cycle after the last reboot. The schema master must complete at least one replication cycle before the schema can be extended.

Verify that the schema master is connected to the network and can communicate with other domain controllers. Use the Sites and Services snap-in to replicate between the schema operations master and at least one replication partner. After replication has succeeded, run adprep again."

                Thanks SK,

Do you have another domain controller configured in AD that is currently offline?

it did not work, still gave me the same error:
