  • How to copy a folder with it share and NTFS permissions?

    Hi there,

I need to copy a lot of shared folders from my old File Server to my new one. I have on this shared folders all kind of NTFS permissions to a lot of different users. Both servers are members in the same Server 2003 domain so there is no problem of users.

    What should i do?

    Hi, Lior-san.
I would look at Robocopy, part of Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools. It also has a nice GUI, Utility Spotlight . Just be sure you read carefully the meaning of all parameters. I accidentally deleted some files on one ocassion, and had to spend some hours to recover them

    Good luck.

You remind of Henry Ford, that said "Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants as long as it is black".
What's wrong with this puppy? Why do you need another way? Robocopy does a great job, exactly what you asked ...

Well, i've tried Robocopy. Is it possible to copy the entire folder and not just the file within it? I cannot find the right parameter

The documentation, robocopy.doc contains all the switches available. One of these will allow you to duplicate a folder structure without copying the files as well.

All the switches are listed in a table in the document.

Give the File Server Migration Wizard a look. It's made by Microsoft to work with 2k3 and 2k.

I used it recently to move some user directories from one server to another and it worked like a champ.
