  • Moving roles from old win2k server

    Hi guys.

I have an old windows 2000 server which was the primary domain controller in our domain. I've since added some windows 2003 servers (updated the domain schema to accomodate exchange 2003...all that good stuff) and its been humming along fine for a while. I now want to get rid of the old windows 2000 server completely.

I have transferred all of the FSMO roles to a new windows 2003 server. However, i am unsure of what else needs to be done. The windows 2000 server still seems to be the default for authenticating clients in our domain (even though the forest appears to be replicating to the 2003 server correctly, if i take down the 2000 server, nobody can login). What do I need to do from here in order to get rid of this server completely?

    Thanks for your help.

Have you made your new 2003 server a Global Catalog server???

No, I dont believe I have. I read in the guide here on petri's site that you should not put the global catalog server on the same machine that holds a certain fsmo role (cant remember which one, I will try to find that).

Well see you need the machine to be a global catalog if you want it to handle authentication.

          Thanks for your feedback.

Here http://www.petri.com/understanding_fsmo_roles_in_ad.htm it says "Note: The Infrastructure Master (IM) role should be held by a domain controller that is not a Global Catalog server (GC). " ...In this circumstance, I would like one server to hold all the FSMO roles and handle authentication...is this not advisable?

How many servers do you have???

If you plan on only having one server then you will need to have your IM as a GC to handle the authentication process.

Well the IM can run on a GC in the following circumstances:

              - Single Domain enviroment
              - Multi-Domain enviroment and every DC is a GC
What do I know, I am only 26.
