  • WWW Publishing service stuck stopping

I've tried searching on google and here but havent really found a solution, other than restart server. Trouble is, i need to restart the IIS service quite regular so this is becoming a bit of a pain that I need to restart the server a couple times a day!

So yeah, are there any other solutions to forcing a service to quit? WWW Publishing service just stays Stopping and wont actually stop, so I cant stop IIS!

you can kill a process with for example: taskkill /IM notepad.exe
however, Isn't it better to find out why you need to restart IIS that often?

Also this command can be used.
    Taskkill /F /FI "SERVICES eq <Service_name>"

I know why I need to restart IIS, it is a deveolpment server and I am testing out all sorts of things and have to restore MSSQL databases and various other things that need IIS to be off while I am doing it. It's not a permanent thing, just while something is in development.

thanks for the info tho, I'll try that out next time it happens

        Ahh ok..
I thought it was a live webserver

anyway, with taskkill you can force to kill the process.

Re: WWW Publishing service stuck stopping

hmm... taskkill doesnt seem to want to work either, it says

INFO: No tasks running with the specified criteria

          Syntax I am using is:

Taskkill /F /FI "SERVICES eq World Wide Web Publishing Service"

          Any ideas?

Re: WWW Publishing service stuck stopping

I tried it with the messenger service and that worked.

            Try: Taskkill /F /FI "SERVICES eq w3svc"

well, that kinda worked. It ended that service, but the World Wide Web Publishing Service still says started within the Services MMC

Looks like this issue is happening again after the latest "patch Tuesday". We are having this issue on many servers. It appears that update KB4338818 is the culprit. I've read that Microsoft is issuing an updated patch. We've been uninstalling this patch to correct the issue.

i had 6 boxes get hit by this issue last night. reboots fixed them, but left me uneasy. i spent much of today trying to figure out wtf went wrong. and here i happen to stumble onto an ancient thread from 2008, that was just resurrected like 3 days ago, and happens to hit my issue right on the nose.

                        thank you, kitcat9825 and wullieb1.

for any other unlucky souls who caught this issue, mine started out from calling: "iisreset /stop" and later calling "iisreset /restart" (in our deploy script). the stop apparently lead to the w3svc getting stuck frozen on the "stopping" state. the start attempt failed with this message:

The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. (2147943453, 8007041d)

Found the same issue in Windows Server 2012 R2. Had to uninstall KB4338815 2018-07 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows Server 2012 R2 for x64-based Systems

Edit: Looks to be fixed with https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...fmonthlyrollup

I've been trying to find a fix for a 2008 SBS (i.e. 2008 sp2)... Has anyone had any luck?
