  • Recommendations on how to migrate from 2003 to 2003

I would like your recommendations and links to how-tos if possible on what is the best way to move from one file server to a new file server under our enviroment.

We have a old server called ntserver3, that we will be replacing with a new one from Dell. This server holds all of our shared folders for the company, and user personal folders. It also holds our Print shares. There is also a SQL database running on this server.

I will need to be able to move all these folders/files to the new server's data drive without loosing anything that allows the user to access these folders (security rights, etc).

Any advice would be greatly apperciated here.

    Thank you!

I think you mean to move files from NT4 to 2003?

Anyway, Personally I use robocopy to copy the files including permissions.
With Hyena I copied the shares.

However this is handled many times over here so please search before posting.

Nope, I meant Windows server 2003 to another Windows server 2003. New hardware but will continue to be our file server.

I have search and saw MANY different ways to do it. Reason why I asked what you guys recommended as the best way to do it from 2003 to 2003. No need to be rude.

Ah ok. However you can still use robocopy and hyena
Also you can have a look at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserv...ocs/msfsc.mspx
For printers you can use printmig http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserv...grator3.1.mspx

What was rude about the answer???

The best and easiest way that i have found is to use Robocopy as Marcel suggested. It will copy the files exactly and with the correct switches will copy the security aspects as well.

Again as Marcel suggested PrintMig will work perfectly for you.

Moving your SQL database however is a different matter. I have no personal experience of moving to a new SQL server (ours still runs ahppily on SQL 2000) but thi article may help
