  • Additional Domain Controller

Hi, Is it possible to add an additional domain controller without the presence of the Primary DC which holds all FSMO Roles?

    Re: Additional Domain Controller

Thats a strange question. Do you want to introduce an ADC at a branch office which does not have a DC with all the FSMO roles?

If yes then it is totally possible over a VPN tunnell.

If it is a new setup, then NO it is not possible. The first DC that you promote in a forest automatically gets all 5 FSMO roles and becomes the Root of AD forest.

    Hope this answers your query!!

    Cheers,

If you want to save some replication as well you can install AD using a copy of the database on cd or similar too.
      cheers

        It's like this:

MAIN Office = 2 servers, SERVER A is the PDC with all the FSMO roles and SERVER B is an additional controller.

BRANCH Office = 1 server, SERVER C is Win2k3 Stock.

We currently do not have a link between the main office and the branch office so I am planning to bring SERVER B to our branch office and will add SERVER C as additional DC using SERVER B to replicate.

            Re: Additional Domain Controller

When will you have a link?
If you aren't going to or it will be in quite some time then there is no point doing this as you may as well go for a new forest/domain.

What is the case behind this?
            cheers
