  • How do I turn off system beep for all users?

Problem: How do I turn off the system beep that comes from the tower for all users?

I already went into the registry as administrator and changed it there under hkey_current_user/control panel/sounds, but this only turned it off for the administrator account. WHen other accounts log on they still get the system beep; with many accounts it would be a pain to go and turn it off individually.

Is there a way to do it for all users?

    OS: windows 2003 SP2

How(and why!?!?!) are the users logging on to the server?

You can put the following in a logon script (.cmd) and that will change it for each user that logs on.
    Code:
    reg add "HKCU\Control Panel\Sound" /v Beep /t REG_SZ /d no /f
    reg add "HKCU\Control Panel\Sound" /v ExtendedSounds /t REG_SZ /d no /f

OK..... just this once though. Next time you need to do some research.

        First create the script:
        - Open notepad.exe
        - Copy and paste the code above into notepad
        - Save the file in a location of your choosing (like C:\Scripts or something) and name it script_name.cmd

Now assign it as a logon script:
        - Start -> Run -> type gpedit.msc and press <enter>
        - Expand User Configuration\Windows Settings\Scripts
        - Double-click Logon -> click Add -> click Browse and browse to the location where you saved the script.
        - Click OK a few times (until you've closed the Logon Properties window) and then close gpedit.msc
        Regards,
        Jeremy

Follow all the steps except this on as your in a workgroup. You'll need to visit each machine to do this.

Haha, yup. I was going off another thread I read where HotDay2222 said they only had one server and it was in a workgroup. I just assumed.

I asked for instructions because some of this stuff is over my head.

                    Hmmm...

                    A few questions for you:
                    • How many users / computers are in your workgroup?
                    • Does the company that you work for have expectations of growth in the near future?
                    • Are you an IT person or are you someone in the office who also does computer work?

Also, restating JeremyW's question, what are users doing on the server? The correlating question would be "How can this be stopped?" I recently came into a place with a very similar situation (users logging onto a server) and am still weeding out some of the ill effects. FYI, WebShots and the Yahoo toolbar do not belong on a Server 2003 machine.

Re: How do I turn off system beep for all users?

Thank you everyone for the input and interest.

I work for a small company with 10 employees (6 on-site and 4 off-site). The 6 on-site employees connect to the server through the LAN; while the 4 off-site employees connect via Remote Desktop. The company expects growth in the future.

I am NOT an IT person, but I am the most knowledgeable about comps.

The off-site users who have access to the server through 'Remote Desktop' is just like as if they are sitting on the physical comp itself. When they click something wrong the server makes the error-beep which is annoying.

                      Goals:
                      1) Set up the computers - done
                      2) set up file back up systems - done through Shadow copy and Mirrored Drives
                      3) set up web server - working on it
                      4) make system secure - working on it
                      5) get rid of annoying glitches on the way - will always be working on it

Now's the time to invest in a good book then or even better some training courses.

I can also recommend the Train Signal stuff.
