  • Decommissing W2K DC fails

    Hello,

I have a W2K DC with Exchange 2000 installed on it. I recently built a W2K3 server, made it a DC and GC and transfered all FSMO roles to it. It is also acting as my DNS and DHCP server.

I would like to demote my W2K server but while its removing Active Directory it fails with the error "The remote procedure call failed" and tells me it will reboot.

I looked at the dcpromo.log but there isin't much info in there.

What could be going on? What is causing the error?

    Thanks for all the help.

Im guessing you promoted that DC/DC from the existing Domain?

Yes, the W2K3 server was within the domain when it was promoted.

no, the promotion of the W2K3 server was done with no issues. Its been running fine with the W2K DC which I want to demote for a little over a month.

Will this procedure affect exchange in any way?

When you upgraded the Windows 2003 Server to a DC did you do domainprep and forestprep?

I must say this is an odd issue. Is the Exchange server staying on this server then?

Yes, I did the domainprep and forestprep.

Exchange will not be staying on this server. I have a member server I just built which I will install Exchange 2007 on it.

I was just going to suggest removing exchange before trying to demote. Exchange puts alot of information into AD.
Does the Windows 2000 server have the other DC as it's primary DNS?

I don't know what the specific issue is but demoting a DC with Exchange on it is NOT supported by Microsoft. (neither is promoting a DC that has Exchange)

I would have never installed exchange on this server to begin with. Unfortunately I inherited this server.

That's fine. But it still doesn't change the fact that you should not demote it while Exchange is on the server.

Yes demoting it with exchange is very risky and troublesome. you said you are getting Exchange 2007? I am assuming you were not putting that on that box because it isnt 64bit more than likely. If you get a new exchange server you can do things the right way and put it as a member server and transfer everything to that box, then force demote that old box.
