  • pre win2000 client unable to logon to domain

    Hi

    My problem is like that:

After some power problems, all pre win2000 clients are unable to logon to the domain.
It appears that the pre win2000 domain name is not functioning.

The network has 1 Dc ( server 2003 ) and some member servers ( nt4, server2000, server 2003 ), and most of the clients are Winxp, but some win98 stations too.

The domain is configured as mixed mode.

It seems that the DC had some logical hd errors, but after running chkdsk they were gone.
The DNS server had some problems but they were fixed ( as far as I can see )
Now the problem is with the WINS server, there are no domain controller record ( 1ch) and no domain master browser record ( 1bh ).
I've tried to add them manually using lmhost file, but only succeeded with the 1ch one.

The only error messages are :
    1. event id 4321

The name "DOMAINCONTROLLER :0" could not be registered on the Interface with IP address 192.1.1.9. The machine with the IP address 192.1.1.13 did not allow the name to be claimed by this machine.

    192.1.1.13 is nt4 member server

    2. some event id 4 errors

    What to check next?

    Thanks
    Yaniv

Re: pre win2000 client unable to logon to domain

I've found what's causing the problems.
On the network adapter configurations, the speed was on auto.
When I've selected another speed, everything was back to normal.
    Checked it using netdiag.

    I've found the solution here:
    http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-1717474.php

Anyway, now what's left is to check the switch and the network adapter.

Many thanks for letting us know the solution.

Was it working fine on auto before it crashed?
      cheers

        Yes

        For several years

I'll post my final conclusion when I finish my testing
