  • DFS, how does to appear to XP machines?

I have setup a domain based DFS namespace and it does not "appear" anywhere on it's own.

I can type in the UNC path via Run or Explorer and then it appears, I cannot see it if I merely browse the Network Neighborhood. Also if I search AD for one of the shares in DFS nothing is returned. I find this quite odd and am wondering if I missed something in the setup or if that's just the way it works

    Thanks
    Mike S

DFS will not "show up" as you put it. It is not an object or share in and of itself. DFS is a namespace that allows you to create "paths" to various shares using the names of your choice. It is only going to be visible from the DFS management console. You would set up your login scripts, folder redirection, etc. to point to the DFS namespace/links and the DFS client component on the computer finds it.

Thanks for the reply. Thought I was missing something so it's good to know I'm not crazy. Having not used DFS much I just needed to know that's the way it is
