  • Peformance help

I have a Dell Powervault 745N. It has P4 3GHz processor and 1GB of Ram. The system is used as network storage for a network of 35 users.

System seems sluggish. I look at taskmgr and the processor is lightly loaded, and there are few things actually running on the system.

    Taskmgr performance shows:
    Commit Charge (K)
    total 1363580
    limit 2531564
    peak 1547420

    PF Usage 1.30GB.

I am trying to get a handle on if the system is swapping bad, and I need to stick more RAM in the box.

Also, would just handling file sharing cause a high memory usage on this box ?

    thanks for any guidance.

What disk configuration, HD type, and speed. For file servers it is that and the NIC. RAM is important for open programs and such.
also defrag and run chkdsk, that may help.

first of all verify the system is up to date, especially the raid controller firmware and drivers.
after that make sure you have caching enabled on the controller.

on dell systems it is pretty simple tosee all those details by installing OMSA
