If you are looking for ease of use and flexible tape operations, Backup Exec + the right agents.

Personally, I NEVER use backup agents for SQL. I setup the backups to files in SQL and have the file backup grab them.

If you are looking for good backup to disk with less flexibility on the tape drive side, you should give Microsoft DPM a shot.

The latest version is very easy to use and I like its concepts. It should be great for a small network, just grab a small server with a ton of cheap hard drive space, and a tape drive for offsite..

Call Symantec, email Symantec or call a local seller to see who to contact. Considering the price, it is a lot of money to blow if they do have a genuine copy and have just lost the documentation.

Re: what backup pro is suitable

I used Backup Exec 9 for two years to backup Lotus Notes data and archives but due to massive increase in volume of data I had to change our backup device to LTO 3.

Evaluated Backup Exec 11d and finally procured it. It is now running to back up approx 500 GB of data and working fine since last 4 months. There are much more feature on 11d as compared to Ver 9 although the look and feel are the same. If you are familiar with Backup Exec 9 then you would find Ver 11d looking similar. I did not find much trouble in setting up from scratch.

We are backing up data from File server, Graphics data and SQL dumps copied on to the File Servers through a scheduled job.

            Cheers,
