  • Removing a DC from a domain to add it to another domain.

    Hi,

Right now, i'm running 2 domains with a 2 way trust relationship. I'm slowly transfering everything to the new domain. The old domain has only 1 DC which is a fileserver too. Since i don't want to format the server, i'd like to know if i could simply do a dcpromo on the old DC and then do another dcpromo to add redundance for the new domain. Should i do that or just do a first dcpromo and let the server be a member server of the new domain ?

    Best regards,

    trep

    Redundancy definitely.
    Definitely.

    Had to say it twice!
Make sure you are happy with any NTFS permissions on the files before you demote though, you can take ownership later should you have to but it is easier to prepare beforehand.

When you DC promo out of the old domain obviously make sure you are happy you have moved all desktops/users out already and that you are sure you want to do it. You can then add the new DNS server(s) onto the NIC and add the server onto the domain and then dcpromo (or dcpromo straight in).
