  • Reinstall domain crontroller that has Exhange installed without resoring system state

    Hi All,

I inherited a network with a Windows 2003 SP2 server that has suffered a lot of abuse and has developed a lot of quirks. I want to reinstall the OS on this server but there are a few complications.
    • The server is the sole domain controller on the network
    • The server is the sole DNS server on the network
    • The server is the sole Exchange server on the network
    • I dont really want to restore the system state or backup set to this machine as it may very well be registry entries, damaged dlls, etc that are causing the quirks and bugs.
    • I need to be able to restore Exchange to the server after the reinstall

I am in the situation where I can bring up a temporary DC and DNS server to take over the roles during recovery.

What would be the best approach to succesfully restoring this server?

    Thanks in advance.

    Better idea is:

Have one more ADC and exchange.

Transfer all the FSMO roles on ADC. Make ADC a DNS and GC also.

Once all the things are up stop netlogon on first DC and let it be there for couple of days to ensure that every thing onnew DC is up.

    Move mailboxes on new exchange.

Demote the old DC then bring it back with fresh O/S and promote it again as ADC and transfer the roles if needed.

Restoring System state will not be a good idea..........

This may be worth a look. It works on all versions of Windows Server and not just SBS. http://www.sbsmigration.com/
      1 1 was a racehorse.
      2 2 was 1 2.
      1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
      2 2 1 1 2

        Thanks kapilsharma11 and biggles77,

        @kapilsharma11, let me be sure what you are suggesting;
        1. Bring up a new server (Server2) and promote to DC and add/transfer DNS, FMSO and GC roles.
        2. Test that it works on network by stopping Netlogon on old server (Server1)
        3. Install Exchange to the same adminitrative group on Server2
        4. Move mail boxes to new exchange server
        5. Remove Exchange on server1?
        6. Demote old DC
        7. Reinstall old server (Server1) with its old name
        8. Promote to DC and transfer roles back to Server1
        9. Install Exchange on server1 in same administrative group
        10. Move mailboxes back to Server1
        11. Stop Netlogon and exchange on Server2 to test
        12. Uninstall exchange from Server2 and demote

Is there anything I have missed or you think I may have missunderstood?

@biggles77, that does look interesting and I will explore it if there is any chance of my ignorance causing a catastrohic disaster

        Thanks again all

Additionally, before un-installing the exchange go through the below articles:

              Thanks kapilsharma11,

This is all starting to make a lot more sense now but I will no doubt come back here with some more questions before I commit.

Thanks for all your help so far, it is very much appreciated.
