  • Server Upgrade

We currently have one server running windows 2003 standard with active directory setup. We will shortly be purchasing a second server.

So for now lets call them Server A and Server B.

At the moment Server A is a file server also running exchange and storing users data.

When we have Server B we want it to be the main file Server, and make Server A the Exchange Server.

What is the best way to go about this

Do we setup Server B as the main DC and then change the Server A as an additional DC. (a child DC) i think not 100% if i got that bit correct.

    Hope someone can help

    Re: Server Upgrade

    1. Make the new server ADC. (Not the child DC )........

    2. Use Robo copy to migrate files from old server to new so that the permissions will retain. Make the new server GC and also transfer FSMO (optional only).

I will not recommned to demote the first DC as Exchange is also running on it.

Ask if some specific information is needed.

if you are planning on an HA implementation for Exchange in the future, it is a good idea to separate Exchange services from AD and DNS, since you already have two servers
