  • Winlogon.exe CPU Cycles Are Killing Me

    Hi!
    Thanks for looking at this.

This has happened to about 3 different workstations in the domain over past 2 months:

Out of nowhere a workstation will exhibit 100% CPU for Winlogon.exe. It slows the workstation down to the point of being useless. 45 to 60 minutes just to get to the desktop...and still crazy slow after that. I call that useless .

Logging in locally is also way too slow.
Booting into Safe Mode with Networking is a bit more tolerable but still VERY slow.
Safe Mode without networking is, of course, good.

In the past I have just re-imaged the workstation but I'm curious as to how often I'll be doing that. I've just tried removing the workstation from the domain and switching it to workgroup (took an hour to do that!) - and still 100% CPU for winlogon.

    Anyone seen this before?

    THANK YOU!

      Hi,

As it seem to be related to some network issue, have you tried with a different NIC....?

Thanks Kapilsharma11.... I followed your suggestion and pulled the relatively new Linksys GB NIC and enabled the on board NIC. No change - winlogon.exe still eating 100%. I sure appreciate your suggestion!

        Any other ideas?

        Anyone?

Re: Winlogon.exe CPU Cycles Are Killing Me

Here is a list of things that haven't worked:

          Chkdsk
          ERD File Repair
          System Restore
Disabling all services and startup tasks
          Booting with NO NIC
          Booting with different NIC
          Moving off Domain
          Renaming
          SFC
          Kicking it

I may not be able to find a way to repair the OS - but it would be nice to find out WHY this happens.

          THANKS
