  • Server 2003 - RAM upgrade

Doing my first ever RAM upgrade on a Windows 2003 Server. It can't be down more than the lunch hour taken by everyone in the office.

It is on a Dell PowerEdge Server. Currently installed with 2 - 512s. Adding 2-1GB to bring it to 3gb.

Any hard learned lessons that anyone experienced so I don't repeat them? Guidance and advice much appreciated.

It's pretty straightforward. Take your time. The hour for lunch should be pleanty of time to complete the upgrade.

Make sure you take ESD precautions.
Take your time and plan out what you will be doing.
Do NOT replace the cover oin the server until you have booted it and tested it to make sure everything is working properly.
Remember and change the size of your pagefile.

I'll double check that info in the morning when I get back to the office and post it.

            Thanks!

The server is in a Doctor's office lab. The lab is very warm. The staff thinks the server is slow due to RAM issues, which it does need, especially since they are adding 8 new workstations in the next 3 months, but I think it is slowing down to the lack of cool air flow. But hey... I am only the tech they called out to install the RAM. I just pray it starts back up without any delays or difficulties. Nd I will definitely remember to resize the pagefile.

Make sure it will take the different sized memory modules. Some servers don't like that.
