  • Can we create Network without a DNS?

    Hi,

Can we create any network without using a DNS server?

And what type of network would you be looking for? I do not have experience with the "any" network. But AFAIK sneakernet does not require DNS.

Ahh... sneakernet, or as it's otherwise called "floppynet"

        Why wouldn't you use DNS?

You can create a network without DNS yes but you CANNOT create a Windows Active Directory Doman without it.

AD requires DNS to work properly.

We will need more info from you about what you want to achieve.

            Thanks for the replies!
I have some idea of creating a network without DNS, but there are some doubts in that, which led me in posting in this site.
I wanted to create the network without DNS, for my client(who is close associate of my friend). I tried convincing but He is not interested at all. There are some questions in my mind:
            1. I wanted to know the pros and cons of this setup.
            2. Is there any cost factor included in this? for installing the DNS server?
            3. Is it more secure without a DNS?
            4. If I have a network without DNS, Can we have a uninterrupted Internet connectivity?

              Hey

To reiterate Wullie, will you be requiring the use of Active Directory? Or more simply put will you be requiring centralised security administration for your users and network resources.

If the answer is yes then you wont be able to avoid it you'll need DNS, if you're setting up a small network, say no more than 15-20 users then you can probably get by.

Your ISP can provide you with a DNS server for your Internet use.

If you setup DNS correctly then you wont need to worry about security but there are a number of online resources that can assist with secure DNS setups.

              Hope that helps
