  • Group Policies with mixed Server 2000 and 2003 DC's

Our domain has three controllers. Two of them run Server 2003, the other runs Server 2000. Our clients are all Windows XP Pro SP2. (With the exception of two minor clients that could be removed or upgraded if need be.)

We had created a list of group policies that we were going to implement, but held off because of a project involving upgrading to Server 2003 and Exchange 2003.

Now that Server 2003 is in place on two thirds of our domain, what would happen in Group Policy if we wanted to use a policy that is only found in the Server 2003 machines? Do unsupported policies in Server 2000 go ignored, or does it cause bad voodoo?

If function is available in 2000 then that setting will get applied to 2000 boxes also does not matter that the template is there or not in 2k machines.

If function is not available in 2000 machines then it's will not effect them.

Okay, so the 2000 clients may just ignore the settings. No big deal there.

What I'm more curious of is the behavior on the Domain Controllers. If they're supposed to replicate GP settings amongst themselves, and some clients target the 2000 DC when logging in, will the GP's that the 2000 server doesn't recognize fail to apply on the clients?

My hope is that the 2000 DC will replicate and hand out the 2003 GP settings (if we use any), even if it doesn't recognize them.

        Don't worry, nothing will happen.
Group policies which are not there for Windows 2000, wil not be applied.
        Replication will also be normal.
