  • Disaster Recovery -- DC to different hardware

    I probably should do a bit more googling and there will be an obvious answer, but here is a scenario I have encountered -- fortunately as part of a DR plan not for real:

    Only 2K3 DC in a small organisation dies permanently but there are up to date system state backups.

    Recovery is onto brand new hardware -- different everything including drive controller type (SCSI to SATA) and MoBo (Dual Processor to Single)

    Recovery process should be:
    Install 2K3 Server, drivers etc.
    Restore AD by doing Sytem State restore in AD Restore Mode

    How does this deal with the different hardware, since AFAIK System State includes hardware configuration, drivers etc?

    I found this which applies to Win2K but also makes the process seem very awkward! Anyone know an easier way?

    OK, replying to myself is an early sign of madness!

    I found this procedure:

    to do a DCPromo from an existing AD backup

    Any reason I could not do that to a new server with
    a) the same name / IP -- probably SID issues
    or
    b) a different server name then seize FSMO roles?
