  • backup to a folder

    hi all

    using backup exec9.1
once a week i backup to backup server
i get about 10 bkf files
one big about 30g with the server name
    and 10 others 1g each

should i inventory and catalog just the folder backup
    or to catalog each file
    those the order importent?

    i tried some options
but each time my restore failed in the middle
and i think its the inventory and catalog issue.

    thanks in advance

    Re: backup to a folder

I am not quite sure I understand...
You say you are using BackupExec 9.1, but you talk about BKF files. These files are the output of Windows Backup Utility. So what are you doing? Backup with Windows Backup and then transfer the BKF files onto tape with BackupExec?
I am not sure why do you need to run Inventory and Catalog all the time?
It will be better if you could post the error message you get when the job fails. It's hard for me to believe that Inventory or Catalog can bring a job to fail (I myself am using BackupExec 9.1, and never encountered such a situation).
    TIA.

      Re: backup to a folder

When using BackupExec to backup to disk (B2D), BackupExec creates bkf files (which can be read by Windows backup and vice versa). If BackupExec cannot find all the media for a backup job in order to do a restore, it will fail the job. You should inventory the B2D folder and then catalog it and try your job again.

        hi both

        thanks for the answers
        joeqwerty
i did inventory the B2D folder and then catalog it
i thought i also should catlog each and each file
and i guess by your answer
that this is not the case why the job failed

        i check it again

        thanks

Indeed, forgot about that. Too long since I last used the B2D option in BE. 10nx, joeqwerty. Sorry, dav9.
Still, can you post the error message?

              Well, it's dav9's call now.
If remember right, the files should remain in the backup folder, together with the CFG files. Even when you delete the backup "media" from the BE console, the files are not removed from the disk.
Maybe the error message would give more info....

                  OK.
Are you by any chance using virtual environment? With Undo Disk option enabled?

                      Re: backup to a folder

I don't know enough the GSX server, but are you using an option that allows you to discard changes you did to a machine when you shut it down?
In other VMWare versions it's called returning to a specific snapshot...
