  • Win 2003 in a Win 2000 environment ?

    Hi,

I'm new to windows admin. And, I need help.

We have a Win 2000 server (incl. ISA server installed) with 20 Win XP clients working fine. Recently, a new PC has been brought in and Windows 2003 server was installed on it as a stand alone machine.

This PC is now to be added to the existing network as a PDC or ADC (whatever the jargon calls it !) as it will be used for trying out some software products like Exchange server or Lotus notes mail - without disturbing the earlier existing setup.

    I hope I am clear ? I have a few questions.

Firstly, is it possible to have a Win 2003 server as a (PDC/BDC) in a Win 2000 server envi ?

Secondly, if yes - please let me know the exact steps required to do so ?

    I have no other option.

    thanks,
    Praveen.

The are no such things anymore as PDC and BDC's. From Windows 2000 Server onwards they are known as Domain Controllers.

As you already have an installation of Server 2003 on your machine then you can add that machine to the domain as a member server and it will plod along as that.

You mentioned that you were going to install exchange 2003/2007. I would install this on a memebr server only as it is NOT recommended to install Exchange on a Domain Controller. You can Google this for more info.

If you don't install Exchange on this machine then you can of course add this machine as a new DC in your exisitng Domian only after you have followed some specific steps.

Thanks a lot for the info.

I will go through the articles fully, implement what i can and come back, if need be
      - As I am not a trained SysAdmin.

      regards,
      Praveen.
