Does anybody has some script written in .vbs that can inventory all software, hardware, shared drives and anything else related to the system, and copy it to a .xml file in the C drive? This regards to a MS server 2003. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

It would be possible, but not really handy cuz XML is only usefull if you have a lots of the same kind of data.

Soft & hardware info is not really info you would store in an XML file.

you could just store it in an text file, read's easier an wouldn't be a lot bigger than an xml file.

(would be an big ass script too, cuz WMI is not really easy to script (in that amount).

Maybe you could whip up some own scripts with
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

to get an idea of what youre asking

    Small Afterburner :
Cuz of the blocking nature of WMI calls, i suggest when you perform so much data gathering through WMI it be doen through Async processing or youre system probably becomes unresponsive while running such an big WMI script.

Our company is not willing to go for SMS because of budget issues. Does anyone else has some other suggestions or scripts that can help me?
          Thanks

              Re: Hardware/Software Inventory Scripts

The tool I would use is Hyena. You have 30-days trial available. Its price is also more than convenient, with only $199 for Standard or $269 for Enterprise.
I am not certain about the .XML output, but it does have reporting possibilities.

Another possibility is SubnetScan. Its output is XLS only, though. And it can give you only hardware specs and installed software.

Disclaimer: I am not related in any way neither to SystemTools, nor to SubnetScan companies.

                  Hi there,
[MOD DELETED] is a useful solution for personal computer and other network asset audit and software inventory. Thanks to this very efficient network inventory tool, you will not need to carry out a manual inventory. Windows, Mac OS X and Linux-based systems can be scanned without pre-installed agents. Using this software, you'll be able to group assets, attach comments to them and add additional information, monitor asset online status, generate flexible reports on different information categories, build table reports with any of the hundreds of asset data fields and do much more. Also, any report can be printed or exported to a popular format.

I think that's just great solution.

Ah... another spammer who doesn't read the previous post. I am sure the OP is NOT actually waiting 9 years for a solution (a commercial product) to suddenly materialise
