  • Moving 2k Domain to 2k3 Domain - Few final questions

Good morning, well I finally got the new server to replace our old w2k domain server. everything is ready to do the migration to w2k3 domain.

I have read all the articles, plus the sticky...

Sticky: Upgrade Win2K Server to Win2K3

How do I install Active Directory on my Windows Server 2003 server?

How do I install and configure a new Windows 2000 DNS server to prepare for a new AD Domain?

So my questions are as follows:

The DNS Server is the w2k domain server as well. Can I install the DNS with a different ip address for the mean time on the new server? Once i finish with the migration of AD, can I go back to the old DNS IP, so I do not need to change the IP on all PCs?

Just for clarification, when you do the /forestprep and /domainprep you do it with the w2k3 disc on the w2k domain server, right?

In terms of the DNS, does it copy all the zones I have configured before?

Anything else I should worry? Thank you for the help.

edit: Noob question. Can I have the AD as 64bit and the rest of the servers in 32bit? I think you can right? Off to :google

    Servers are:
    Citrix 32bit
    Accpac 32bit
    Exchange 2003 32bit
    Act+more 32bit

    Can I add a BDC as 32bit?

Why do you need to change the DNS on all the PCs? Change it in DHCP and let it do the work for you.

How many zones do you have and what kind are they?

Yes, heaps to worry about but I won't worry you with them. Let it be a surprise if they happen. Surprises are nice.

No since there is no BDC (or PDC) in a 2000/2003 environment.

Forgot to say, well done on using to find answers to your questions. So many don't seem to be able to find the URL for that or any search engine.
