  • Not able to access network path by system name

    In Windows 2003 server

When I try to access a network path “start”-“run”-”\\machine_name\share_name”, and meet error message “No network provider accepted the given network path.” But when I try to access a network path “start”-“run”-”\\Ip_Address\share_name”, I can ping that machine successfully

I think this error coming after my office Colleague did something wrongly in ADMINISTRATOIVE TOOLS - ROUTING AND REMOTE ACCESS

    Kindly sugguest.
    Best Regards,

Re: Not able to access network path by system name

    hi there,
this problem is due to dns record of your server. You can solve this problem by verifying that you got A record for your server in your DNS. On the client computer execute this command
    ipconfig/flushdns
the above procedure will solve your problem
    cheers

Re: Not able to access network path by system name

Are you trying to access the server locally using a UNC-path, or is it a UNC-path to a remote computer? http://www.jsifaq.com/SF/Tips/Tip.aspx?id=11005

So you can can (or not?) access the share using the ipaddress of the machine?
And what if you are using the fqdn of the machine:
          "\\machine_name.domain.local\share_name"
          Run: cmd /k ipconfig /all
Is there a Primary DNS Suffix on your local computer?

          (more Ipconfig.exe switches: IPCONFIG /registerdns)

Re: Not able to access network path by system name

Correct your DNS Host (A) Record, PTR Record and ur Name Servers (NS) in the forward Lookup Zone and in the Corrspondence Reserve Lookup Zone.

Restart ur DNS Service, then Ipconfig /flushdns and Ipconfig /Registerdns. In the DNS Server as well as the clinent /server which is not able to resolve name.

Also, make sure that the server /client which u r trying to access is having a Host (A) record and PTR record in the corrspondance reserve lookup zone.

Hope that will solve the problem. If not, please don't hesistate to comback.

Re: Not able to access network path by system name

trprasad78, did you DCPROMO up (install Active Directory) or DCPROMO down (remove Active Directory) when you ran DCPROMO? If DCPROMO down, you will need to DCPROMO up again and reinstall DNS.

Totally unhelpful. How about a suggestion on how to fix the DNS problem. After all, trpasad78 said "DNS DOMAIN.COM is removed , Name server is removed".

trpasad78, we really need more info on your setup. I am assuming that the server is (or was) a Domain Controller since you ran DCPROMO on it. Is this the only Domain Controller on this domain?
Where were you trying to access the SHARE from? The server or a workstation? If a workstation, how about some info about it?

Reinstall must have been a bit of a pain, but thanks for posting back that you got the problem sorted. We appreciate it.
