  • DUAL BOOT / WIN XP AND WIN 2000 SERVER

    Hello

In my computer I would like to install win 2000 server in addition to win xp
and to have the ability to make boot of each one with menu boot selection.

In HD C installed win xp

now I would like to install in another partition win 2000 server

in final I would like to have a menu that will pop up in the moment I start the computer

how can I install win 2000 server and to have a dual boot ?

you can also answer in HEBREW !!!
The rules DO apply to me.

    You may do it easy.

First of all,use your win2k bootCD to install win2k in a Partition, when you

installed the OS,you can just boot to the win2k.

Then,in windows 2000,use your winxp CD to run setup, when copy files was

finished, the system will reboot, press the ARROW key when the system

reboot, then the boot menu would appear, select win2k and Press enter key

to boot into win2k. Edit the boot.ini file in your HD C (the file is EADONLY,

    HIDE and SYSTEM),for example:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=5
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Microso ft Windows 2000
    Server" /fastdetect
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft windows xp
    Professtion" /fastdect

At last, you may delete the install temporary files in you HD C.

By the way,if you would backup the BOOT SECTOR,it would make you so

    easy to do that:

    Backup the BOOT SECTOR,
    Install win2k,
    Restore the BOOT SECTOr.

      so , as I understand that ....

I have to make a whole format to my computer and to make it unpartitioned , after that to put into the cdrom win 2000 server install cd and to install win 2000 server (within the installation I will create a partiontion , lets say 10 GB )
after that , I finished to install win 2000 server , I will start the computer normally . everything OK now , like a new computer with only win 2000 server.

Now I will put into the cd rom the WIN XP CD , while I am in win 2000 server Operating System (I will not make a boot from win xp cd) , and I will install win XP (will win xp installation will give me the ability to make installation while I am in win 2000 server ? )

a note !!!! : I would like to install win xp in a new partition ( the result is two partitions , that every one is 10 GB) ???? !!!!

lets say I finish to install win xp
      everything OK

      You wrote me :

you mean that I can make a backup of the BOOT SECTOR
how do I make a backup of it ? may you give me a whole guide how to make a backup of the boot sector ? (PLZ)
and where to save the backup ?

All the above I wrote , can you check if I understand everything right ?

ONE big question , let's say that I take a computer which WIN XP is already installed in it.
and I don't want to first make a whole format and erase any patition in the HD and first install win 2000 server and after that to install win xp.
now I would like to install win 2000 server in addition to win XP
and to get a dual boot optiion.
lets say , I would like to install the win 2000 server to a new partion
(win xp is already installed in HD C)
SO , I make a boot from the win 2000 server cd and installed to a new partition.
after I finish to install win 2000 server I got a menu while I make a boot.
the menu give me the option to select which OS to boot from.
when I choice to make a from win 2000 server , everything OK
when I choice to make a from win XP , it's not go head , I cant make boot from it.
I got error msg while try making a boot from WIN XP :

      start windows

windows 2000 could not start beacuse the following file is missing or corrupt:
      \windows\system32\config\systemd startup option for windows 2000,press F8

what to do ? now I can't to make a boot from WIN XP , I can make only boot from Win 2000 server.

thank you very much to everyone who trying to help me !!!!

        ok

There is more than two ways to install DUAL OSs. Here, I use

Microsoft OS_Loder to create DUAL OSs.

1.Clear install to create DUAL OSs.

First, partition two partitions, one for windows 2000 server, the other for

        windows xp.

        Iinstall windows 2000 server.

        INstall windows xp.

        OK,the DUAL OSs is Created.

2.You have installed windows xp in HD C, create DUAL OSs.

If you would like to install Windows 2000 server in a blank partition,

you might use PARTITION MAGIC to create a new blank partion,it makes

you not to lose your data.

Use Windows 2000 server BootCD to install windows 2000 server in the

partition which you want to (but not the HD C).

When you have installed windows 2000 server, you can boot to

windows 2000 server normally, and you just could boot to windows 2000

server,it is right? If you want to boot to windows xp, you would get a

        error mssage.

How could you correct this problem?

OK,boot to windows 2000 server, use your windows xp CD to run setup,

when finished copy files, the system will reboot, by then, the pop up

menu has already created, but the delay time is very shortly, so, you

ought to Press ARROW KEY or F8 Key when your computer start, then the

pop up menu would appear, select and boot to windows 2000 server, edit

the BOOT.INI File in you HD C.

If you windows 2000 server has intalled in HD D, Edit the BOOT.INI

        file like this:

        [boot loader]
        timeout=5
        default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT
        [operating systems]
        multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Microso ft Windows 2000
        Server" /fastdetect
        multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft windows xp
        Professtion" /fastdect

        OK,the DUAL OSs is Created.
