  • Upgrade from Nt 4.0 to Windows 2003 .

Hi , I would like to upgrade my existing network from Nt 4.0 to windows 2003 . I have a new box that I have installed windows 2003 server . How do I migrate users from the Nt domain and then setup Ad on the 2003 server ? . Any suggestions would be appreciated

One method you could look into is the "Alternate PC upgrade method":

    1) Add a new standard PC as an NT4.0 BDC to the NT4.0 network.

    2) Promote it to PDC, demote existing PDC to BDC.

    3) Upgrade it to Win2003, this will automatically install AD and keep all your users, passwords, groups etc.

    4) Add the new server as a Win2003 member server.

    5) DCPROMO it.

    6) Move GC and FSMO to it from the temp PC.

    7) Remove temp PC by DCPROMOing it (don't just remove it).

    Begin upgrading existing BDCs

It's recommended you keep one of your BDCs offline during this process, just in case.

      Hi Friends,

We too followed the same procedure when we upgraded out NT server to windows 2000 DC. But due to some reasons we want to change the domain name. Hence we used ADMT tool ( A wonderful tool provided by MS) to migrate all the resources such user/computer accounts along with password to the new win2000 server.
