  • Server 2003 R2 SMB Share via DNS Alias

    Hi,

I'm having a problem that on a Windows 2003 R2 Server that I have set up with SMB sharing. I can access the SMB shares via the machines IP and hostname, but cannot access it via a DNS alias. I've previously set this up on 2000 and 2003 servers pre R2 by using the MS recommend DisableStrictNameChecking registry entry, but its not working under R2.

Does anyone know if there have been changes to R2 that would affect this behavious? Perhaps disabling lookback checks or something?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers

    Cam Marshall

    SOLVED!

It turned out to be an issue with SPNs and Kerberos - I had an old machine tied to AD called "Machine A" so the SPN was incorrect when someone tried to connect to "Machine B" using the "Machine A" dns alias

Removed the computer account for the old machine and problem solved - should have tidied that up sooner
