  • remove old DC with metadata cleanup

    Hello all,

I'm new to the forum and I've been in the field for around 5 years.

We originally had a 2000SBS (DC) and a 2003 Server (DC/Exchange). The 2000 server got hit with a virus and we could not recover it. Now the 03 server is running Exchange and is the DC. I've read that I can run metadata cleanup to remove all instances of the old 2000SBS from AD. Everything has been running smoothly except for our POP3 service which has to be started manually. There have been several event failures looking for the old 2000 DC. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Here is a good article that I've recently used in an identical scenario.

    I hope that it helps.

Might want to check out these as they more thoroughly cover removing the remnants of a failed DC.

There may, however, be some special considerations because it's SBS.
One I know would be licensing. If you're not going to use the SBS anymore then you need to upgrade your licenses.

      Steven would know more.

Seems a funny setup considering SBS2000 has Exchange as part of the package. If you just wanted to have Exchange 2003 it would have been cheaper to upgrade to SBS2003 rather than go and purchase Server 2003 AND Exchange 2003 AND the extar CALs that would have been required.

How did you add the GC role to Server 2003 when you took the SBS2000 server offline as the Server 2003 would still have the SBS2000 Schema running on it.
