  • Windows Server 2003 suddenly stops responding

    Hello forum,

I have a Windows Server 2003 running some Exchange and VPN functionality. Its for my personal use only, so it only consist of some old part, an AMD Sempron something, and an ASUS board. I'm not at home right now, so I can't give you the correct specs, but I'll post them when I get home.

My problem is, that about every 14 days or so, it suddenly stops responding on the network. I access it via remote desktop, but I once tried to connect a monitor and mouse to it, when it was frozen. The weird thing is, that the computer itself is not frozen. Its only the network connection that doesn't work. No internet, no ping, repair doesn't work either.

It's kind of annoying and the only thing to do is to push the reset button, and then it works like a charm again.

I have tried to put in a 3COM PCI network adapter, still same problem.
I have tried formatting the computer, still same problem.

Nothing in the event viewer either.

I really don't know what to do, and I'm afraid it is because of the cheap hardware.

What do you think could be the problem?

    Best regards

How much RAM does it have? I was thinking if it is minimal RAM then you may have a memory leak in some app that is causing it to stop responding.
    1 1 was a racehorse.
    2 2 was 1 2.
    1 1 1 1 race 1 day,
    2 2 1 1 2

Its got a 1 gb ram, but the onboard graphicscard "eat" some of them.

Its been running for 16 days now, so it probably dies within the next days.

      Right now in taskmanager:

      Physical memory:
      Total 916,180
      Avaliable 514,768
      System Cache 311,932

      Thanks for the help.

      /Henrik

Have you updated the NIC card drivers from 3Com??

          No, that I haven't tried.

Using the drivers windows found automatically..

I will try that, the next time it breaks down.

Not always the best option i'm afraid.

Try changing the drivers ASAP and see if it then falls over after that.
