    To tell you the truth, I didn't really understand your question. Can you specify your network setup and what is the problem?

      Change 2 values in registy:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore
      * Add/modify: "DisableSR"
      * Reg_Dword: 1 =disable, 0= enable
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\sr
      * Modify: "Start"
      * Reg_Dword: 4 =stop, 0 =normalstartup

      Personally I would leave it on, and thinking about if I want to install the "Recovery Console" too.
      Or is it for some reason you thinking of deactivating System Restore?

          Yes, System Restore is a very important feature of XP, especially when you need to troubleshoot odd behavior of the OS. It saved me from installing the OS from scratch a lot of times, both at work and at home. So, why would you want it disabled?

            It takes up a lot of space.

            I Ghost my "stable" C: partition as required and roll back if necessary. I find System restore doesn't save me from all the whacky stuff I do to my machines.

            To each his own.
            Cheers,

            Rick

              Only a clean install can save you "from all the whacky stuff I do to my machines" Or Ghost Or a mirror disk broken prior the "abuse"...
              The space issue can be solved: one can decide how much space he assigns to the System Restore archive. And the disks nowadays are huge! I still have at home my first 640MB HD. And here a 2GB one...
              As I already said, it saved me from some awkward and unpleasant situations, when users have installed things they shouldn't, that couldn't just ignore the question.

                    So far, I can only think of good things about it. It will be nice to know why you don't like it.

                      You go and wash your mouth out with a single malt. Good punishment? No, well, you now have to spit it out without swallowing a drop.

                      System Restore is your friend if used correctly.

                        And that my friend is the entire problem.

                        How many of us have run into people who are completely illiterate when it comes to computers?? I would hazzard a guess at 99.9999999999999999999999999%.

                        How many time have these users then decided to have a go and fix themselves and ultimately kill a damn machine.

                        I personally do not and will not use this. Nothing beats beating your end users into shape with a big stick about getting things backed up each and every night.

                        Ohhh and i always find that a huge data loss is good for the old kudos when you restore it for them. Mucho points.
