  • pinging on ip but not on hostname

    Dear Forum,

In one of my netwroks, I have one computer (yes only one) that cannot ping on the file server by the name, but by the ip works fine, when I ping the DC ping fine by the hostname too. The computer can ping and surf the internet and sure ping other computers on the network. What can be the problem and how can I fix it?

    Thanks

Re: pinging on ip but not on hostname

More info needed - what is the error message you get when you ping the file server by name? Does the IP address you get when you ping by name match the IP address of the actual box?

Can you post the IPCONFIG /ALL output for the broken workstation and a working one?

What do you get on the broken workstation if you run "nslookup <fileservername>" in a command prompt?

Also check the HOSTS. file for an entry for the file server.

Note: the DC is .0.2 and is the primary DNS where is installed the sharepoint, the file server IP is .0.8 and is the secondary DNS

Re: pinging on ip but not on hostname

On the bad machine, try this:

            - IPCONFIG /flushdns
            - IPCONFIG /registerdns

Now try to ping the server by HOSTNAME.

What happens if you're using nslookup?

Not if you haven't given us enough info including what you've done up to the point of posting.

So yes, none of us thought you had tried this.

Anything else you'd like to share as it is an intriguing problem and we all know the solution will be a "duh" simple one we've all overlooked.

EDIT: BTW, you did an NBTSTAT -R for good measure? Also, I believe some have had success with strange problems like this by uninstalling / reinstalling their network stack.
