  • dc down dc up

    hai,
i have 2 dc,( in the lab, i parctice before try online)
the first one is the first dc in the forest, and hold the fsmo, global catalog,
    also runnig dns,dhcp,sharing folder.
the second dc is additional dc in the domain,
the 2 dc replicate and work together just fine.
in the first dc i running backup to the system state every day,
now the first dc is dwon (hardware problem), i can turn it on,
so my question is how to become the additional dc to pdc?
how to move fsmo, global catalog ( ara thay part of system state?) to
    the new dc....
and if i restore system state, all the object connect to the first domain in the forest
and now i have new dc...
so if someone can hekp me by giving me good direction it will be great.
    thanks sharon

There is no PDC anymore. There is however a PDC Emulator which is one of the FSMO roles.

how to move fsmo, global catalog ( ara thay part of system state?) to
    the new dc....
http://www.petri.com/seizing_fsmo_roles.htm WARNING - only seize the roles if you are never going to bring the original role holder back online.

    e.g.
If you seize the roles from ServerA to ServerB and then you want to bring ServerA back online YOU NEED TO REFORMAT IT FIRST!

You'll also want to make your second DC a Global Catalog too. http://www.petri.com/configure_a_new_global_catalog.htm

Are you asking a question or telling us that you restored to new hardware? Or maybe just restored the backup?
    Please clarify.

          Re: dc down

Here's the flow of how you should deal with this situation:

-Determine if you can restore the failed server. If you can then do so.
          If not, then:
-Seize the FSMO roles to the second DC and configure it as a GC (instructions are provided in my previous post)

NOTE - it is not crucial to get the FSMO roles back online immediately. Your network, in all likelihood, will function fine for a few days without them running but you won't be able to do various administrative tasks. (like add users)

            dc down dc up

            hai,
the situation is like that i have 2 dc server 2003,
one is first domanin controller in the domain
            and hold fsmo,dhcp,dns.
second is aditionall dc in the domain replicate with the first dc and work fine.
now the first dc is become out off service ( in the lab i practice).
and thanks to you i learn to Seize fsmo( yes i know i need to format it.... but igot
image before installing the ad, so i am ok)
and run clean up meta data.
but my first question how to convert tha additionall dc to become primary dc
do i need to run dcpromo again? ( i miss somthing???)
and second question if i made changes to first dc like add 10 user or ou and now i miss this object in the new dc ,
from some reson not rplicate how shuold i recover
this object? ( and i have backup of system state of of course)
            thank sharon

              Re: dc down dc up

If you siezed all the FSMO roles and your exisiting DC is holding them then it already is running as your Primary DC.

Are you experiencing any issues with the DC??

              *EDIT*

I am presuming you have also moved the other roles from the old server across as well. These include but are not limited to DNS, DHCP, WINS etc, etc, etc
